How to Choose Your NFL Team to Root For: A Beginner’s Guide

So, you’ve decided you want to get into football. Welcome to the club. 🏈💗

Maybe your friends are talking about football every weekend. Maybe you keep seeing NFL content all over your FYP. Maybe you watched a game and suddenly realized you actually want to know what’s happening. Or maybe the cute gameday outfits finally got you — no judgment here.

But now you have one very important question:

What NFL team am I supposed to root for?

If you didn’t grow up in a football family or live somewhere where everyone automatically roots for the same team, choosing an NFL team can feel surprisingly complicated.

Here’s the good news: there is no rule for how you have to choose your NFL team.

You’re allowed to pick a team because of where you live, your family, a player you love, the uniforms, the fanbase, a random game you watched five years ago, or because you simply decided, Yep. Those are my guys.

So if you're a new football fan trying to find your team, here are a few ways to narrow down your options.

1. Start With Your Hometown or Closest NFL Team

The easiest place to start is geography.

Do you have an NFL team in your city or state? Is there a stadium within driving distance? Does everyone around you seem to wear the same team colors every Sunday?

Choosing a local team gives you an instant connection.

You'll have a better chance of watching games locally, attending games in person, finding watch parties, meeting other fans, and finding team gear basically everywhere.

But here's an important Fangirl reminder:

You do not have to root for your hometown team.

Living near a team doesn't automatically mean you have to become a fan. If another team catches your attention more, go with it.

2. Look at the Teams Your Family and Friends Root For

Football fandom is often passed down.

Maybe your dad has been a Packers fan forever. Your mom loves the Cowboys. Your best friend refuses to miss a Ravens game. Your boyfriend, girlfriend, roommate, sibling, coworker, or entire friend group might already have a team.

Joining them can make learning football way more fun because you already have someone to watch games with.

Plus, having someone dramatically explain decades of team history while you're just trying to understand why everyone is yelling on third down is basically a football rite of passage.

Of course, you can also do the opposite.

Pick their rival.

3. Find a Player You Love Watching

Sometimes you don't choose the team first.

You choose the player.

Watch a few NFL games and see who catches your attention. Maybe it's a quarterback making ridiculous throws, a wide receiver making impossible catches, a running back breaking tackles, or a defensive player completely taking over a game.

You might also connect with a player because of their personality, story, social media presence, style, community work, or interviews.

Start following that player and their team.

Before you know it, you might find yourself checking the schedule, learning the roster, and getting emotionally invested in whether they win on Sunday.

Congratulations. You may have found your team.

4. Choose Based on the Team's Personality

Every NFL team has its own vibe.

Some teams have decades of history and tradition. Some have huge national fanbases. Some are perennial contenders. Some are rebuilding. And some will have you questioning every life decision you've ever made by the fourth quarter.

Part of choosing your NFL team is figuring out what kind of fan experience sounds fun to you.

Do you want to root for a team that's expected to compete for a championship?

Do you love an underdog?

Do you want a historic franchise with generations of traditions?

Do you want a younger team that you can watch grow?

Or are you ready to emotionally commit to a team that might make every Sunday unnecessarily stressful?

There is truly something for everyone.

5. Yes, You Can Pick a Team Because You Like Their Colors

We're going to settle this debate right now.

You can absolutely start rooting for a team because you like their colors, uniforms, logo, mascot, or merch.

Seriously.

Football is supposed to be fun.

If you see a team's gameday fits and immediately think, Oh, I could work with this, that's as good a starting point as any.

Maybe you love the Dolphins' aqua and orange.

Maybe Raiders black and silver fits your closet perfectly.

Maybe you're into the Packers' classic green and gold.

Maybe Falcons red and black speaks to you.

Whatever gets you interested enough to start watching is valid.

The football knowledge can come later.

6. Think About Where You Love to Travel

Here's one people don't always consider: Where would you actually want to attend a game?

If becoming a football fan eventually means planning gameday trips, this can be a fun factor when choosing your team.

Imagine yourself planning a weekend around a home game.

Would you want to experience a freezing outdoor game surrounded by diehard fans?

Would you rather have warm weather and turn gameday into an entire weekend getaway?

Is there a city you already love visiting?

Choosing a team can eventually give you an excuse to explore new cities, stadiums, tailgates, restaurants, and football traditions.

And yes, planning an entire vacation around a football game is completely normal behavior around here.

7. Learn About the Fanbase

When you choose an NFL team, you're not just following 53 players.

You're joining a fanbase.

And every fanbase has its own traditions, inside jokes, rivalries, chants, superstitions, tailgates, and general level of chaos.

Spend some time on TikTok, Instagram, Threads, X, YouTube, and Reddit looking at different NFL fan communities.

Which fans seem fun to you?

Which team's content keeps appearing on your feed?

Which fanbase makes you want to join the conversation?

Community is one of the best parts of football, so finding people you enjoy experiencing the season with matters.

8. Watch Multiple Teams Before You Decide

You don't need to declare your lifelong NFL allegiance after watching one game.

Give yourself a few weeks.

Pick three or four teams you're interested in and watch them play.

Pay attention to which games you naturally care about more.

Eventually, something funny starts happening.

You'll notice yourself thinking:

Wait...why am I nervous right now?

Or:

WHY WOULD THEY CALL THAT PLAY?!

Or:

WE NEEDED THAT TOUCHDOWN.

Did you catch that?

You said we.

Girl, I hate to break it to you.

That's probably your team.

9. Don't Choose a Team Just Because They're Winning

Can you become a fan of a really good team?

Absolutely.

But don't feel like you have to choose whoever won the Super Bowl last season.

NFL teams change quickly. Players leave. Coaches change. Injuries happen. Teams rebuild. A powerhouse can suddenly struggle, and a team nobody expected much from can become one of the best stories of the season.

If you genuinely love a winning team, root for them.

But choosing based only on who's currently on top might not give you the same connection long-term.

Because eventually, every fan learns one very important lesson:

You have to love them when they're losing, too.

Unfortunately.

10. You Don't Have to Have Just One Team You Like

Another football rule we're throwing away:

You can enjoy watching more than one NFL team.

You might have your team and still have other teams you like.

Maybe you root for the Falcons but love watching the Bills.

Maybe you're a Jaguars fan but there's a player in Cincinnati you always cheer for.

Maybe you have an NFC team and an AFC team.

You can also change your mind while you're still figuring football out.

There is no NFL Fan Police coming to confiscate your Sunday Ticket subscription because you haven't officially committed yet.

Watch football.

Learn the players.

Find your people.

Have fun with it.

Your team will probably find you eventually.

Is there a player I already love?
Watch their team.

Put them on the shortlist.

Would I want to visit their stadium?
Add them to your list.

Do I like the team's fan community?
Keep watching.

Which team's games am I actually excited to turn on?
That's your biggest clue.

But What If I Know Absolutely Nothing About Football?

Perfect.

Seriously.

You don't need to know every NFL team, understand every penalty, memorize every position, or know decades of football history before you're "allowed" to become a fan.

Every football fan started somewhere.

Pick a game.

Ask questions.

Google things.

Follow football creators.

Learn one rule at a time.

And don't let someone make you feel like you have to pass a football trivia test before you can wear the jersey.
